Why I'm making Pointer
Pointer - General Purpose Agent
I've been thinking about general purpose agents - AI systems that can control your entire computing environment, transcending any single use case or industry. While tools like OpenAI's Operator can perform basic browser-based tasks, and various startups offer narrow solutions, the market demands more.
The vision of AI extends far beyond simple task automation. We need agents that can:
- Operate in near real-time with minimal latency
- Understand and execute complex, multi-step plans
- Work across browsers, desktops, and applications
- Manage interactions with other AI tools and agents
- Serve as true collaborative partners
There are still significant challenges:
- Hallucinations in AI planning and execution which cause compounding errors and wasted resources
- Limited context windows for video/visual understanding
- Accessibility across computing environments for agentic
- Need for better navigation from agentic
The value isn't just in commanding an agent to perform tasks. It's in having a robust, reliable colleague that feels like an extension of yourself into your virtual computing environment. One that can understand your intent, manage complex workflows, and adapt to your needs.
That's why I'm building Pointer - a truly collaborative general purpose agent that lives beyond the browser. As we outsource more of our knowledge work to AI, we need a meta-agent that can transcend computing environments and manage software interactions on our behalf.
