Demo: One-Shot App Development with AI

AI development has evolved to the point where you can build entire applications in a single session. Here's my seven-step process for one-shot app development.

The Process

1. Set Up Your Environment

Get started with an AI-IDE. Check out my list of recommended AI coding tools to find one that suits your needs.

2. Configure Your AI Assistant

Create a system prompt file with clear rules and expectations. See my guide on coding with AI for a template.

3. Voice Your Vision

Use voice mode with ChatGPT to describe your app idea. Get a summary of the conversation to capture key points.

4. Generate a PRD

Take the summary and ask AI to create a Product Requirements Document. Use the PRD prompt from my coding guide.

5. Start Development

Open your AI-IDE and provide the PRD to the chat environment. Let the AI begin scaffolding your application.

6. Build and Debug

When you hit errors, ask AI for a summary of the issue. Feed this to a reasoning model like OpenAI's O1 or Phind for solutions.

7. Deploy and Review

Deploy your application and ask AI to summarize the development process. This helps reinforce learning and identifies areas for improvement.

I recently created a Chrome extension that allows us to instantly search and get results from Perplexity. Here's what was built:

To install the extension:

Unzip the downloaded file
Open Chrome and navigate to the Extensions page
- Click the three dots menu → More Tools → Extensions
- Or type chrome://extensions in the address bar
Enable "Developer mode" using the toggle in the top right
Click "Load unpacked" and select the unzipped folder
Visit Perplexity to see it in action
